On–Off Kissavos & Olympus Tour

DAY 1

Mount Ossa - Greece’s Hidden Gem of Nature and Myth

We get geared up and start from our base in Litochoro driving towards Tempi Valley on local asphalt roads. After a short stop we continue the ride along the coast at the perimeter of Mt. Kissavos (Ossa). There are beautiful cove beaches with turquoise clear waters where its optional to stop and swim on hot summer days or just relax before we hit the uphill dirt roads. The geomorphology and biodiversity of this area creates an almost tropical feeling which feels very exotic and will remind you of other countries. Especially in spring time the vegetation is so lush and colorful.

Before we leave civilization behind we can stop for a refreshing drink at Karitsa village also known as “the balcony of Aegean” with an amazing vertical view of the coast. Once we enter the dirt forest roads we will stop at Kalypso gorge where a 20min. short walk is necessary to reach the 80m tall waterfall with its blue lake. We will continue mostly off-roading for the rest of the day till we reach Kissavos mountain refuge at 1600m.

For those who wish to climb Mt. Kissavos summit (Prophet Elias) at 1978m. its an average 2 hours hike (easy level).

The rest who wish to relax can drive straight to our traditional lodge in Spilia village where delicious traditional dinner will be freshly prepared in this unique building. Local wine and tsipouro will be offered.

DAY 2

Mount Olympus – the south west side

We wake up in Spilia and after enjoying a tasty greek breakfast we will drive off road through other traditional villages on our way to south west Olympus. Our next big stop is Kati Lake, an alpine small lake at 1400m. surrounded by fir and oak forests. Here we are far out from noise and civilization and we take small breaks to enjoy nature’s sounds and colours.

We continue towards Kallipefki small village on the SW slopes of Olympus. Coffee stop at the village main square or at a nearby maple tree forest on hot summer days. Now we enter the asphalt road which leads to Sparmos monastery at 1000m. built in the 14th century. According to weather conditions and the team’s mood we can continue either an easy ride back or a more demanding off road, technical drive. Both ways will offer a rush of adrenaline and memorable moments. The cherry on the cake is our overnight stay at Ktima Bellou, an organic farm 4* hotel awarded for its greek gastronomy and wines.

Since Olympus Moto Tours are big fans of good food and wine, we will not keep these secrets to ourselves…

DAY 3

Mount Olympus - the north east side

We start the day with a rich breakfast overlooking the green slopes of west Olympus surrounded by pure natural beauty and bird sounds. We ride small mountain On and Off roads towards the Orlias waterfalls. The ride is very playful with some close turns and very different landscape than day 2 since we are now start to enter the sea facing slopes of Olympus.

This change of geomorphology and vegetation within such a small distance makes Olympus a Biosphere Reserve and a World Heritage Site declared by UNESCO.

Olympus is not Mythical without the presence and proofs that once this was the Home of the Gods and the centre of all ancient Greece. Ancient Dion or “the City of Zeus” is the archaeological site built at the roots of Olympus (306-304BC) that allows us to witness how ancient Greeks lived, prospered and worshipped their Gods. Entering the ancient park and museum is optional but recommended.

After Dion we start our last uphill drive towards the heart of Olympus National Park. The road is asphalt with some close turns overlooking the Thermaikos Bay until we start to hide in the black pine and birch forests.

We will stop at St Dionysios old monastery which in contrast with the ancient world is the most important Christian site of the area built in 1542 at at an altitude of 850m. Here we will have a short walk to the hidden waterfall in the Enipeas canyon where we can cool down. Finally, we stop at Prionia at 1100m. -the highest point the road goes- and the starting point of the main E4 trail to the summit (Mytikas).

After the break we will drive straight down to the beach at Summit Zero, a worldwide traveler’s hub, where local food, cold beers and wine will be waiting to celebrate the end of this amazing 3-day tour.

According to weather and time of the year we have the option to leave the bikes here (Summit Zero) or return to our home garage in Litochoro.
